But Celestia will not further her teachings, because despite her prowess, the young sorcerer has much to learn. Sunset believes otherwise. Quick Review - To everyone clamoring for a proper Sunset backstory and motivation I am proud to announce that this is not it. It's unbelievably vague and generic. It pains me as a massive Shimmerfriend. Also, all the human designs look like ayy lmaos. More so than the show. Hopefully they pick it up in the next EqG comic... (3/10) FiM #13-14 (My Little Pirate) Characters - Fluttershy, Mane 6, Hoofbeard Summary - Fluttershy has become too attached to a fish she rescued, and regrets letting it go. So when a dangerous pirate arrives looking for a crew, she take it is an opportunity to reunite with her fish. Also a pirate adventure thing, Hoofbeard seeks a treasure behind a perilous journey. Quick Review - Utterly forgettable. I really cannot be bothered to reread it for a review. It was okay I think? (5/10) FiM #15-16 (The Book Worm) Characters - Twilight, Mane 6 Summary - A magical bookworm begins devouring his way through Twilight's library. That wouldn't be such an issue (except to Twilight), if the characters from to books didn't begin popping up in the real world. Now Twilight and co must take down the bookworm in it's own domain: The Realm of Books. Quick Review - I like Pinkie's fantasy world. Another just okay one. Lotta references to other media. Marvel, LoTR, Disney shlock, you get the idea. The void had some solid character moments for Twilight and Rainbow. (6/10) Friends Forever #1: Pinkie & Applejack Characters - Take a guess Summary - In the issue, Applejack and Pinkie Pie enter a baking contest, and culinary hijinks ensue. Quick Review - Rough start for FF. Predictable and silly. Art here is really not good. However, it does have Guy Fieri pony. (3/10) Friends Forever #2: CMC & Discord (Highly Recommended) Characters - CMC, Discord Summary - Discord takes the crusaders to increasingly dangerous dimensions in their search for a cutie mark. Quick Review - This one is super sweet. Some of the best Discord showing in the series. The CMC being some of the only ponies to understand and show gratitude towards Discord for his effort is so damn heartwarming. (8/10) Friends Forever #3: Celestia & Spike (Highly Recommended) Characters - Celestia, Spike Summary - Spike wants to get Twilight something nice for her birthday, but the gift he settled on turns out to be slightly hard to come by. He enlists Celestia's help in getting the gift for her student, a gift found deep in the dangerous Crystal Mountains. Quick Review - By far my favorite portrayal of Celestia. Lot of nice and touching dialogue between her and Spike, and some insight on Celestia's mindset as a ruler and teacher. Shame they went further down the "Celestia is an incompetent and petty klutz" route later on. (8/10) FiM #17-20 (Reflections) (Major) (Recommended) Characters - Mane 6, Celestia, Starswirl, Sombra Summary - Celestia has been secretly visiting another dimension for quite some time. A world where good is evil, and evil is good, and she has fallen madly in love with the benevolent King Sombra. A world where she and Luna are villains threatening to take over both dimensions. And it's all her fault. Quick Review - This one is super polarizing. For me, it's a collection of great ideas utilized poorly. The mirror dimension is a very interesting concept that I wish would be re explored. And i'm content with all the characters. But the climax, touching as it maybe, kinda dampens this one for me. Still, (7/10) Friends Forever #4: Twilight & Shining Armor Characters - ^^^^^ Summary - Twilight Sparkle is worried her and Shiny have drifted apart since their foalhoods. An opportunity presents itself to rekindle when her and Shining Armor team up to catch a ghost that haunts the Crystal Empire palace. Quick Review? - Turns out, there are a lot of FF comics, and a lot of them are pretty inconsequential. There are only so many times I can say, "It was cute. I liked it." before that gets redundant. So unless I have something more to say, i'm gonna reduce these to just Rating and Summary. Pretty good tho. (6/10) Friends Forever #5: Fluttershy & Zecora Summary - Fluttershy and Zecora try to figure out why Fluttershy can suddenly hear her animal friends talk. Spoilers: It was Discord. Go figure. Rating - (4/10) Friends Forever #6: Rainbow Dash & Trixie Summary - Rainbow Dash is called upon by a newly crowned Queen Trixie to perform for a kingdom of Diamond Dogs. Turns out being Queen isn't all its cracked up to be. Rating - I mean, it's got Trixie. (6/10) FiM #21-22 (Manehattan Mysteries) (Recommended) Characters - CMC, Babs, Trixie, AJ, Rarity Summary - Doesn't need one. Trixie and Babs are in it. Go read it. Quick Review - The relationship between Babs and Trixie here and they parallels they draw from each other are pretty great. I always love those kinds of strange character interactions. (7/10) Friends Forever #7: Pinkie & Luna Summary - Princess Luna seeks Pinkie Pie's help in making ponies laugh so she can participate in a Royal Event. Rating - (6/10) Friends Forever #8: Applejack & Rarity Summary - Typical Rarijack episode, road trip edition. Rating - It introduces those stupid bull cowboys. For that (4/10) FiM Issue 23 (Pets to the Rescue) Characters - Angel, Winona, Opalescence, Owliscious, Gummi, Tank Summary - When there owners are nowhere to be found, the pets team up and must set out to find their owners and assist them in whatever magical conundrum they may have found themselves in. Quick Review - I think the villain here would have been really interesting in almost any other scenario. Other than that, minimal dialogue, and the art isn't exceptional, so (5/10) Friends Forever #9: Granny & The Flimflam Bros Summary - Granny Smith helps Flim and Flam patch things up after they have a falling-out over a mare. Rating - This one is pretty wholesome. (7/10) FiM Issue 24 (Discord in Time) Characters - Discord, CMC, Flutters Summary - Discord take the CMC and Flutterbutter on an a journey through time to show them some animals. Hijinks ensue. Quick Review - Another really nice Discord issue. He isn't use to having all these friends and watching out for them in his chaos, so he drags them along in his dangerous adventures. He then immediately forgets this lesson. (7/10) Friends Forever #10: Fluttershy & Iron Will (Major) Summary - Fluttershy helps Iron Will with has marital problems. Rating - (6/10) Friends Forever #11: Rainbow Dash & Spitfire Summary - Rainbow Dash helps Spitfire overcome her greatest fear: Children. Rating - Art style is cute, but super jarring. (6/10) FiM #25-26 (The Good, the Bad and the Ponies) Characters - AJ, Mane 6, Bulls Summary - Doesn't matter. Quick Review - Don't read this one. Seriously, it's bad. Nothing really makes sense. Applejack has some sort of brain defect. Twilight arbitrarily cannot use her magic on Equestrian citizens. Even when they are dangerous criminals, apparently? (1/10) Friends Forever #12: Pinkie & Twilight Summary - Twilight tries to help Pinkie overcome her harrowing cocaine addiction. When that fails, Twilight starts doing coke herself to make the guilt go away. Pinkie stops doing coke for like five minutes, and Twi considers that a success. Rating - (4/10) Equestria Girls Annual 2014: Holiday Special Characters - Humane 6, Sunset Shimmer, CMC Summary - The holidays are nearing, and Sunnybun is feeling pretty down in the dumps. The girls try to cheer her up by inviting over for a few nights of debauchery. This cheers her up a bit. So, the Humane 5 go home on the shortbus and Sunny walks home, finally content with herself. Meanwhile the CMC decide that Sunset is keeping them from spending time with their sisters(?) and start a social media account in her name, called Anon-A-Miss, which they use to spread explicit photos of their sisters from the "sleepovers" and frame Sunset. Everyone in the school begin to tragically suffer from severe mental deficiencies and buy it immediately. Because the chick who just saved all of your sorry asses from soul sucking harlots like a week ago is going to post shit about her friends with her fucking face attached to the account. Quick Review - I really wish I could shit on this more, but I got quite a bit to get through. (-3/10) Friends Forever #13: Rarity & Babs Seed Summary - In the issue, Rarity must entertain Babs Seed when Sweetie Belle falls ill. Turns out Babs idea of entertainment is different than Rarity's. FiM #27-28 (The Root of the Problem) (Major) Characters - Mane 6, Bramble, King Aspen Summary - The Everfree spontaneously begins protruding into Ponyville. At the root of this problem, the druid-esque Deers who wish to reclaim the parts of their forest that were lost. Quick Review - The Deer are really neat, and having them be the night elves of Equestria is a fun concept. But the deer people kind of get the shaft, and most of the story focuses on the avaricious minotuar Well-to-do. (6.5/10) Friends Forever #14: Luna & Spike Summary - In the issue, Princess Luna enlists Spike's help in solving a dragon problem in Fillydelphia. Rating - Luna and Spike spend three pages together, and the rest of the story is focused on an annoying pink fangirl dragon. (4/10) Friends Forever #15: Applejack & Mayor Mare Summary - In this issue, politics are boring. Rating - (5/10) FiM Issue #29 (Ponymania XXIX) Characters - Cheerilee, Cherry Blossom Summary - Cheerilee reunites with her twin sister—one of the most famous wrestlers in Equestria. But when Cherry Blossom gets injured, Cheerilee is forced to take her place in the ring. Quick Review - As with most Jay Fosgitt's stuff, cute, but a lot of fluff and not much to carry an interesting story. (6/10) FIENDship is Magic #1: King Sombra (Major) (Highly Recommended) Characters - Sombra, Radiant Hope Summary - Twilight Sparkle and Princess Cadance discover King Sombra's diary and learn of his rise to power. But before that, how he was a sickly outcast, a troubled young amnesiac whose only friend was the equally strange Radiant Hope, who still had imaginary friends. Quick Review - Much needed backstory for Sombra, and very well done at that. His connection to Radiant Dawn feels genuine, and his corruption by way of shitty crystal ball is absolutely tragic. My dude just wanted to go the Crystal Faire ): Also Princess Amore fucking dies. (9/10) FIENDship is Magic #2: Tirek (Recommended) Characters - Tirek, Scorpan, Sendak Summary - Tirek, young and ambitious, sneaks out of his royal families castle to visit the unhinged sorcerer Sendak to learn more about magic. Scorpan is worried about his brothers ambitions. Quick Review - Doesn't add much character depth to Tirek, but it's suitable. Presents a lot of cool ideas not explored as thoroughly as they could be. Leaves a lot up to interpretation and head canon. (7/10) FIENDship is Magic #3: Sirens (Non-Canon) Characters - The Dazzlings, Starswirl Summary - The fate of the world is determined by a music battle, and if the Dazzlings win, all is lost. This is not Rainbow Rocks. Quick Review - Not a single character acts in character, and while the other Fiendship issues are take themselves pretty seriously, this one is drastically different tonally and opts for comedy. Which really sucks, because I wanted actual backstories for the Sirens. Humor falls flat as well. (2/10) FIENDship is Magic #4: Nightmare Moon Characters - Nightmare Moon, Nyx (Not that Nyx) Summary - A recently banished Nightmare Moon attempts exacts revenge on Princess Celestia through the world of dreams. The Nyx, the keepers of the dreams, will not allow it. Quick Review - I much prefer Nightmare Moon as a manifestation of Luna's negative emotions over depictions a corrupting parasitic entity. Story is serviceable, a bit sad, nothing noteworthy. (6/10) FIENDship is Magic #5: Queen Chrysalis (Major) Characters - Twilight, Chrysalis Summary - The Mane Six visit the imprisoned Queen Chrysalis, who recounts her past exploits. Quick Review - Case of unreliable narrator here. Chrysalis implies that changelings are made of pure dark magic, which is an idea I actually quite like, but having them reform like they did would say otherwise. Story is sorta all over, like a Chrysalis anthology short. (6/10) Friends Forever #16: Diamond Tiara & Silver Spoon Summary - Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon compete against the Cutie Mark Crusaders in a scavenger hunt. Rating - Smokin' hot goth pony makes an appearance. (7/10) FiM #30-31 (Ponyville Days) Characters - Rarity, AJ, Twilight Summary - Civil War over a land dispute or something, can't really be bothered with this one. Quick Review - As far as I remember, this is one of the issues that gives everyone in Ponyville a crippling case of "has to wear a helmet while outside". Dumbing down characters to make a story work is obnoxious. (3/10) Friends Forever #17: Twilight & Big Mac Summary - Twilight takes a trip into Big Mac's brain to learn how to focus as well as he does. Rating - (7/10) Friends Forever #18: Rainbow Dash & Fluttershy Summary - Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy go to their flight camp reunion. Rating - Pretty adorable. (7/10) FiM #32-33 (Night of the Living Apples) Characters - Mane 6, Spike Summary - Apples take over Ponyville. Our heroes turn into bats. This is not a crackfic. Quick Review - Batpony designs are pretty damn cool. Story is whatever. (5/10) FiM #32-33 (Night of the Living Apples) Summary - Rarity gets carried away when she goes into business with Mr. and Mrs. Cake. Rating - (6/10) Friends Forever #20: Luna & Discord (Recommended) Summary - Princess Luna helps Discord when he has trouble sleeping. Rating - Neat character dynamic. Good stuff for Luna and Discord. (8/10) FiM #34-37 (Siege of the Crystal Empire) (Major) (Non-canon) (Highly Recommended) Characters - Sombra, Mane 6, Chryssi, Umbrums Summary - A mysterious new villain brings several of the series' past antagonists together to attack the Crystal Empire. Quick Review - I want to keep my gushing about this one brief. The umbrum design and lore are some of the best things to come out of the comics. This Sombra is infinitely better than the one in the show. I definitely didn't cry at the end because i'm a big boy. (9/10) Friends Forever #21: Spike & Zecora Summary - Spike and Zecora save Ponyville from a disease, and only they are immune. Rating - (7/10) Friends Forever #22: Celestia & Pinkie Summary - Princess Celestia tasks Pinkie Pie with making the perfect cake for Princess Luna's birthday party. Rating - Barely any Celestia. (4/10) Friends Forever #23: Applejack & Fluttershy Summary - Applejack and Fluttershy become involved in the search for a legendary creature called the Pigasus. They must keep its existence a secret. Rating - No Kirin (5/10) Friends Forever #24: Rarity & Gilda Summary - Gilda enlists Rarity's help in designing uniforms for a new sports team in Griffonstone. Rating - Weird body horror. (7/10) Friends Forever #26: Shining Armor & Prince Blueblood Summary - Shining Armor is forced to work with Prince Blueblood on a diplomatic mission to Yakyakistan. Rating - Holy shit they made Blueblood redeemable. (8/10) FiM Issue #40 (Twilight meets Spike) Characters - Twilight, Spike Summary - You know, it's exactly how it sounds. Quick Review - Very cute. (7/10) Friends Forever #27: Pinkie & Granny Smith (Recommended) Summary - Pinkie Pie offers to help Granny Smith after she breaks her hip right at the start of cider season. Rating - Precious. (7/10) FiM Issue #41 (Rainbow Dash and the Very Bad Day) Characters - Zecora, Rainbow Summary - Rainbow Dash is being a c**t, and enrages literally everybody else in Ponyville. In other words, they captured her character just right in this one. Quick Review - I like rhyme schemes, but I hate bluefast. (4/10) Friends Forever #28 Princess Luna and the Cutie Mark Crusaders Summary - The Cutie Mark Crusaders assist Princess Luna during a foal slumber party at Canterlot Castle. Rating - I like bone pony. (6/10) FiM Issue #42 (A Pinkie Pie Story That Pinkie Pie Kinda Sorta Remembers) (Recommended) Characters - Rarara, Ponker Po Summary - Pinker Pop, still cooling off from her ten month long cocaine binge, tries to help Rarity make a gift for a friend very special to her. Pinkie Pie becomes a domestic terrorist. Quick Review - I like the part where Pinkie bombs a movie theater potentially killing dozens of ponies. Hilarious. (8/10) Friends Forever #30 Twilight Sparkle and Princess Cadance Summary - Twilight Sparkle helps her sister-in-law Princess Cadance when she suffers from an unexplained lack of self-esteem. Rating - I quite like this little arc for Cadance. (7/10) Friends Forever #31 Rainbow Dash and Little Strongheart Summary - Little Strongheart seeks Rainbow Dash's help in finding a legendary creature called the Rainbow Crow. Rating - Little Strongheart, where ya been for six years dude? Beautiful art. (7/10) Friends Forever #32 Fluttershy and Daring Do Summary - Daring Do enlists Fluttershy's help in uncovering an ancient treasure. She must also face her arachnophobia. Rating - Better than the actual Flutters/Do episode. (7/10) FiM Issue #46-47 (Election) Characters - Twilight, Mayor Mare, Donald Trump Summary - Mayor Mare struggles in her bid for reelection, against definitely not Donald Trump guys I swear. Quick Review - Haha I lied, but like I totally got you though right? Like it was super subtle? I bet you didn't even catch on. (5/10) Friends Forever #33 Applejack and Cherry Jubilee Summary - Applejack learns the secret history of Cherry Jubilee. Rating - Cherry Jubilee is pretty hot. (6/10) FiM Issue #48-50 (Chaos Theory) (Major) (Recommended) Characters - Discord, Starlight, Mane 6 Summary - An astronomical event causes Discord to transform from a creature of chaos to a being of pure order. But not all is at seems with the newly minted Accord. Quick Review - Starlight gets one arc throughout all of these comics. luckily it's pretty good. She gets some good character growth. Accord is pretty god damn terrifying. Actual sound logic is used to best the villain, which is pretty rare. (8/10) Friends Forever #34 Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich Summary - Pinkie Pie and Cheese are eaten by a possessed party house. Seriously. Rating - (6/10) Friends Forever #35 Twilight Sparkle and Starlight Glimmer Summary - Twilight Sparkle and Starlight Glimmer's attempt to organize the books in the Castle of the Two Sisters turns into a battle of egos. Rating - This would have been much better is not illustrated by Fosgitt. It doesn't suit this more weighty type of story. (7/10) Friends Forever #36 Rainbow Dash and Soarin (Recommended) Summary - Rainbow Dash follows Soarin to a remote location to help him with a dangerous mission. Rating - Great Soarin and Spitfire moments. (8/10) Friends Forever #37 Rarity and Trixie Summary - Dude, it's got two of the best pones. Read it. Rating - (7/10) FiM Issue #51-53 (From the Shadows) (Major) Characters - Mane 6, Donut Steel Summary - The edgiest OC to ever exist begins to erase Equestrian history from books and minds, in fear of his heritage catching up to him. Quick Review - Super interesting villain motivation, terribly generic villain design. (7/10) My Little Pony: Deviations Characters - Prince Blueblood, Mane 6, Nightmare Moon Summary - Have you ever wondered what would have happened if Prince Blueblood was sent to Ponyville instead of Twiliight? No? Too bad, dude. Summary - I would have loved to have gotten more deviations. Read about Blueblood being an arrogant prick for half an hour. It's fine. (6/10) Friends Forever #38 Princess Celestia and Princess Luna (Recommended) Summary - Princess Celestia and Princess Luna's minor squabbling escalates just before they plan to participate in the Sisterhooves Social. Quick Review - Friends Forever Finale. Andy Price outdoes himself yet again. Hilarious and Heartwarming. (8/10) FiM Issue #54 (I Didn't Read This One) Summary - No seriously, didn't read it. Fosgitt, Fluttershy, fluff, the three F's of i'm going to be fucking bored. Maybe it's a masterpiece. I'll never know. FiM Issue #55-56 (Wings Over Yakyakistan) Characters - Rainbow, Rutherford, Ember, Spike, Pinkie Summary - When the dragons invade Yakyakistan over an ancient treaty, it's up to heroes to defend the Yaks and try and diffuse the situation. Spike doesn't like the idea of fighting his own kind. Quick Review - Let it be known that I would have been totally cool with the Yaks getting destroyed. Typical let go of the past, look to the future stuff. Rainbow's parents are here, and they are fun, and Spitfire gets a bit of extra love, so (7/10) FiM Issue #57 (Apinkalypse Now) Characters - Pinkie, Mane 6, Discord Summary - Pinkie Pie accidentally becomes trapped in Discord's realm. If you wanted to see more of Chaos Pinkie, then here you go. Quick Review - I really like the how the chaos dimension is shown in the comic, in that adapts to the current owner if they themselves can't be turned. You'll notice by this point the writers will do whatever in their power to make sure Starlight can be written out somehow. (7/10) FiM Issue #58 (The Vines That Bind) Characters - Twi, Flutts, Zecora, Cattail, Aqua Vine Summary - Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, and Zecora follow the notes of Mage Meadowbrook search for a flower said to cure any ailment. The search soon becomes an obsession for Twilight, determined to get her name in the history books. Quick Review - Dude, Twilight, you already saved the world at least seven times. That Magenta Bloom shit would just be a footnote. Overall pretty forgettable. (5/10) FiM Issue #59 (Pie in the Sky) Characters - Rainbow, Pinkie Summary - Jesus Christ Pinkie she doesn't fucking like pie. We had a whole episode about just this. We didn't need a comic to teach the same lesson. That's a;lso your review. (3/10) FiM Issue #60 (The Stars on Our Ponies) Characters - CMC, Gilded Lily Summary - The Cutie Mark Crusaders help a filly who doesn't want to follow in her family's footsteps. But she is scared to disappoint them if she does pursue her own interest. Quick Review - Gilded Lily's design is absolutely adorable. She also looks like she tastes pretty good, like Oranges n' Creme. Solid one-off. (7/10) FiM Issue #61-62 (Convocation of the Creatures!) (Major) Characters - Twilight, Raven Summary - Twilight Sparkle makes a discovery during the largest assembly of creatures in history that threatens to redraw the map of Equestria. Quick Review - Glenda canonically has a stutter, making her best changeling. Good bit of overbuilding in this one, without falling into the common trap of making the convocation feel too modern. (7/10) FiM Issue #63 (All in Marederation) Characters - Twilight, Pinkie, Temperance Summary - Ponyville gets swept by an anti-sugar movement that threatens to put Sugarcube Corner out of business. Quick Review - MLP's thinly veiled take on the Temperance Movement. Another one where all of Ponyville is turned into exceptional individuals. (4/10) FiM Issue #64 (Everything Old) (Recommended) Characters - Rarity, Fluttershy, Coco Pommel Summary - Fluttershy and Rarity travel to Manehattan, where Rarity discovers that old, ugly fashions are back in style. Quick Review - I absolutely adore the message here. Things you made when you were younger that you maybe embarrassed of now don't have to be cast aside and forgotten. Rather, look to them to see how you have improved and how you can still improve. Coco is a QT. (8/10) My Little Pony: Legends of Magic Annual 2018 (Major) (Recommended) Characters - The Pillars, Pony of Shadows Summary - The Pillars of Old Equestria face a new danger that tests their skills as a team. One that they may find feels a bit like a deja vu. Quick Review - I really like the relationship between Stygian and Rockhoof here. I wonder if Starswirl was always meant to be a dickhead? Green Pony of Shadows looks badass as fuck. Also, Somnambula is cute as hell. (7/10) Edit - Consider there are twelve of these. I am not awake enough to add them all. Read' em. They're pretty good lore stuffs. FiM Issue #65 (Queen for One Less Day) (Recommended) Characters - Celestia, Scarlet Petal Summary - Princess Celestia disguises herself to live among ordinary ponies for a day. But when her magical necklace is stolen by a thief, she may lose the ability to turn back into herself for good. Quick Review - I love this comic. Shows off the best parts of Celestia's character. I'm running out of synonyms for heartwarming, so just go read this one. (8/10) FiM Issue #66 (Applewood Follies) Characters - Mane 6 Summary - Twilight Sparkle and her friends discover that a film is being made about them. But when the director hands them the reins, they discover it's harder to make a movie than they thought. Quick Review - I'm really not a fan of more modern tech in Equestria. I don't mind it at all if it's used as a background gag, but here, where it's the plot of the comic, I just find it obtrusive. Ponyville Mysteries Issue 1 Characters - CMC, Nurse Redheart Summary - "Welcome to a new series of mystery and intrigue! The Cutie Mark Crusaders discover their inner detectives and solve crimes nopony else can! Will they be able to discover who is stealing supplies from Ponyville hospital and get their schoolwork done at the same time?" Quick Review - None of these are particularly engaging, so I won't review the rest. When I figure these mysteries out all by myself like the grown man I am I feel particularly proud, like I just solved a crossword puzzle they have on those Kiddie menus at iHop. Ponyville Mysteries Issue 2 Characters - CMC, The Dude Summary - "There's a major mystery at the... bowling alley? Ponyville's team is set to break a bowling record, but the alley keeps being ransacked by a mystery criminal! Will the Cutie Mark Crusaders be able to set the pins right and solve the caper?" Ponyville Mysteries Issue 3 Characters - CMC, Old People Summary - "The Cutie Mark Crusaders must solve a dangerous mystery at the Ponyville Retirement Village before it's forced to close! Is one of the curmudgeonly residents to blame or could it be a villain from their past?" FiM Issue #67-68 (Tempest's Tale) (Major) (Highly Recommended) Characters - Tempest, Cadance, Glitter Drops Summary - Tempest Shadow travels across Equestria to learn more about friendship and comes face-to-face with her past. Quick Review - These issues do wonder for Tempest's previously scarce character. If your a fan of Tempest, or especially if your not a fan of Tempest, check these out. Smug Cadance is best Cadance. (8/10) Ponyville Mysteries Issue 4 Characters - CMC, Applejack Summary - "The Cutie Mark Crusaders are trying to solve the case of the missing spa water! But what happens when all signs point to a member of a Crusader's own family being the culprit?" FiM Issue #69 (Magical Apple) Characters - Pinkie, Mane 6 Summary - Pinkie gets god powers. Again. FiM Issue #70 (Extreme Bingo) Characters - Golden Horseshoe Gals, Rainbow, AJ Summary - Grannies Gone Wild 2! Quick Review - Grannies Gone Wild 2! (5/10) FiM Issue #71 (Happy Haunts) Characters - Student 6 Summary - Twilight Sparkle's School of Friendship students experience Nightmare Night in Ponyville for the first time. Things don't exactly go as planned. Quick Review - I hate this issue. Not because it's bad, but because we are teased with infinitely more interesting stories. I want to see the princesses on Nightmare Night, like the cover! I want to see Shim and Glim's NN, like on the first page! Fucking cocktease. (4/10) FiM Issue #72 (Pie in the Sky, Again) Characters - Pinkie, AJ, Pear Butter Summary - Applejack discovers an old Apple family pie recipe and seeks to recreate it for Granny Smith. Along the way, they meet ponies who her mom has touched in her life. I wouldn't mind being touched by Pear Butter. Quick Review - Standard. Wholesome. Sweet. (7/10) My Little Pony: Nightmare Knights (Major) (Highly Recommended) Characters - Luna, Stygian, Trixie, Capper, Tempest, Daybreaker, Eris Summary - Princess Luna assembles a team of former villains to face a new threat to Equestria. Quick Review - I cannot recommend this arc enough. Every single character gets a chance to shine. Stygian gets much need development. Eris and Daybreaker make a menacing evil duo. The villain casino makes a great setting. Sunset Shimmer gets a cameo. (Even though her and Starlight are once again shafted.) Capper absolutely steals the show. Tempest is a bit more brutish than she usually is, but as we don't know much about her anyway, that's a very minor gripe. (9/10) FiM Issue #73 (Copycats) Characters - Fluttershy, Twilight Summary - A magical amulet causes Fluttershy to become more animalistic. Quick Review - I have no idea what the fuck what went on in this issue or why. It's a mess. (3/10) FiM Issue #74 (On the Mane Stage) (Recommended) Characters - Zephyr, Fluttershy, Silverstream, Pixie Cut Summary - Fluttershy's brother Zephyr Breeze attends the All-Equestria Mane Styling Conference. Quick Review - Even Zephyr Breeze can snag a qtπ hairstylist gf. There is hope for us yet, bros. Could you tell i'm down a third of a bottle of Grey Goose by this point? (7/10) FiM Issue #75-78 (Major) (Recommended) Characters - Cosmos, Twilight, Discord, Fluttershy Summary - The Mane Six's quest for the fallen stars of a missing constellation puts them on a collision course with their most galactic adversary yet. Discord's clingy ex wife who still hasn't received any child support. Quick Review - They don't even bother to write Starlight out anymore. She just doesn't exist. Cosmos isn't as fun of a villain as Eris or the Storm King, but she's serviceable. I do like her design. Discord puts his past behind him for good physically and metaphorically. (7/10) FiM Issue #79 (The Ponyville Anniversary Spectacular) (Highly Recommended) (Major!) Characters - Sunset Shimmer, I don't know I don't remember the rest Summary - Fuck you it has Shim Sham. Quick Review - Sunnybutt jams out on a guitar at the end. (11/10) My Little Pony: Spirit of the Forest Characters - CMC, Filthy Rich, Diamond Tiara, Mayor Mare Summary - Something about a forest mystery? Quick Review - Lackluster follow up to the amazing Nightmare Knights. Stop giving the CMC mini series you hacks. (4/10) FiM Issue #80 (Live-Action Role Pony!) Characters - Mane 6, Bulk Biceps Summary - The Mane Six play a live-action role-playing game. The usual Pinkie hijinks ensue. Quick Review - I'm so use to using LARP as an insult now, it's weird to see it in an endearing manner. Fun little adventure issue. (6/10) FiM Issue #81 (Pretty Fly) Characters - Scootaloo, Rumble, Rainbow, Wind Sock Summary - Scootaloo and Rumble learn about the only Earth pony to become a member of the Wonderbolts. Quick Review - Heartwarming. Seriously, someone get me thesaurus. (6.5/10) FiM Issue #82 (Dog-Dog-Dogged Determination) Characters - Rarity, Mane 6, Celestia, Cerberus Summary - Rarity is tasked with giving Cerberus obedience training after he leaves his post at Tartarus again. Quick Review - Dude, Rares, never change. (6/10) FiM Issue #83 (The Strange Case of Silver Blaze) Characters - Twilight, Spike Summary - Twilight Sparkle and Spike investigate when a famous racing tortoise goes missing. Quick Review - Less Sherlock Holmes and more Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. This is a good thing. (6/10) My Little Pony: Feats of Friendship (Major) (Recommended) Characters - Student Six, Swift Foot Summary - Come one, come all, to the School of Friendship's very first sporting event-the Feats of Friendship! As Sandbar, Smolder, Gallus, Ocellus, Yona, and Silverstream prepare for the new competition, they realize they're going to need one more pony to round out their team. Enter Swift Foot, a mysterious new exchange student! But will she help strengthen the Young Six's bonds of friendship-or just drive them apart? Jealousy threatens our favorite youngsters in this brand-new miniseries! Quick Review - This is by far and away my favorite Student 6 depiction in the franchise. It shows off very well how far they have come and how well they work together as friends and individuals. Swift Hoof makes for a great antagonist, trying to plant seeds of resentment but realizing that it doesn't work on the students and realizing her own faults. Dom Athenian Warrior waifu also included. (8.5/10) FiM Issue #84 (Identity Crisis) Characters - Ocellus Summary - Ocellus struggles to complete a big project for the School of Friendship midterm. Quick Review - Man, I wish my problem was that I was so booksmart I had trouble fitting it all into my creative outlets. What a fucking struggle that would be. But I understand wanting to be a perfectionist, and that sucks. Amazing insight as usual by me. (5/10) FiM Issue #85 (Apple Bobbing) Characters - AJ, AB, Big Mac Summary - Applejack teaches Apple Bloom the meaning of courage by telling her the story of how she conquered her fear of the water when she was little. Quick Review - A whole lot of touching moments between AJ and AB. A very cozy little story if you ignore the giant spider. (7/10) FiM Issue #86 (Marble and a Hard Place) Characters - Maud, Marble Pinkie Summary - Pinkie Pie and Maud Pie help their sister Marble make friends by helping her throw a party. Quick Review - I love the Pie family, dude. The chemistry between them is something we don't get to see often enough. Quick Review - Meh. (6/10) I can finally pass out now.

Maybe magical, extraplanar, or just unusual. Comment and I'll add yours to the list :)
Imp Imporium - This store is small and boxy, and entirely made of redwood. A tall devil stands behind the counter wearing a suit and tie, and imps are chained to the walls. He offers you the services of one of his imps for a small price- the rights to the imp's memories of what they did when you're done. He requires a much larger material collateral for if you don't return the imp or it dies/is irreparably maimed in your service.
Coagulation Station - A seemingly normal (if ugly) old woman runs this roadside popup store. It is nothing more than a cart with a sign next to it reading "Coagulation Station" painted roughly in red over a lime background. She offers healing supplies, potions, and rations in return for a small vial of your blood. (Feel free to come up with consequences for buying from her, such as her being a hag or using it for a strange ritual, etc.)
Elemental Extras - An air, earth, fire and water elemental stand in the four corners of this (entirely brick) shop. Unfortunately, the "shopkeepers" only speak primordial, so good luck if you don't. They each offer to put special elemental effects on whatever you own, such as a fire effect on your sword, an ice effect on your armor to freeze whatever hits you, or an earth effect on an arrow to have surrounding dirt swallow whoever it hits. Everything here is understandably very expensive.
Vraug aks stor - A very tall, older orc hero enthusiastically tries to sell his weapons in this shop in order to retire. They're hung up on the walls, all showing varying signs of use. Some appear to be magical. Vraug also tries to tell his customers stories about each weapon before they buy (and especially before they ask.) The weapon most prominently displayed is a +4 Great Axe, with obsidian blades, a dragon-scale tip on the end and golden threads running down the handle. There are a few chinks in it, and the tip somehow has a dent in it, but the damage only seems to add to the charm. He charges an extraordinary price for this axe.
Angel Bazaar - Apparently recently the churches haven't been generating enough coin to keep the local deity fiscally afloat, and some angels have taken it upon themselves to raise that extra money. Some are selling more regular items for cheaper prices, such as healing items, some are selling more extravagant magical items, and even others are offering "miracles." They're all set up in a series of stands in a small square that you swear wasn't here before.
Betsie's Black Cauldron- everything is black, especially Betsie. From black oak ethanol to black licorice she has ingredients and potions unique to her gimmick. u/LateLolth96
The Fleeting Flyer's Fast Findings- if the item floats, flies, or is otherwise airborne this shop might have it. Limited time only and has (randomized) a rare three uncommons and six commons but the more you travel the more likely you are to come across it because it's on a one man spell jammer with two carnival cars behind it. u/LateLolth96
The Kyuss Kasino- a worm themed casino where the main attraction is the purple tunnel which is a purple worm in a metal harness designed to prevent it from moving and to keep its mouth open. The wager, and incidentally, the show is if you can make it out the other end alive you [win]. There are scrying orbs that display a live feed of the current "adventurer" in the worm for 5 silver lasting 30 min before the next five silver (no refunds). Quest hook? u/LateLolth96
Djinni Gin Jamboree- a once a month festival celebrating a moon cycle of the dm's choosing. Marids sell their distilled saliva as well as various forms of never-before-seen-by-man fish dishes, and water elementals play live music which more or less sounds like the rhythmic gurgling of a muddy brook. u/LateLolth96
The Crossroads Corridor - An invite only shop, given to adventures who have a number of their own magical items. When the invitation is slid under any closed doorway, said doorway will become the doorway to the shop. Operated by The Masked Man, it is a magical item shop that trades magical items for magical items of similar value. Leaving will exit out the door you originally put the invitation under. u/Hacknslaasher
Bottom's Bottomless Meatpies - It's cheap, delicious (although a bit gamey and hard to chew) and the servings are enormous. The shop is run by an old goblin with an enormous smile, his name is Toothy Bottom, less so because of his bum, and more so because of a secret that he isn't telling any one, the secret that has made his Meatpie-shop the most well visited in the entire area, at least by those not able to afford fine dining in the upper districts. For you see, underneath this humble shopped, staffed every hour of every day with more goblins than you can count on one hand, or two hands if you have taken ABM (Advanced Barbarian Maths), lies a large, cavernous mining operation. You enter it through a set of large trap-doors found in the cold-store basement where you find the literal wheelbarrows of meat that allow every customer to order however much meat they want in (or on) their pies, as long as the Goblins can lift it up to the counter (the largest order so far was, according to the Goblins managing the front of the house, "the weight of a small baby wrapped in a nasty hunting dog." they have made no comment as to how they know that specific measurement).Once you are through the trap-doors, you'll find a rail-system rivaling that of the largest Dwarven mines, with rail-master goblins timing and directing all the in- and out- going traffic, and every cart that comes in is absolutely and utterly loaded with meat, which is then loaded on wheelbarrows and carted up through the trapdoor. If you were to follow the rails as deep as they go, through all of the winding tunnels, across chasms, past various cave-dwelling monsters that try to snack on the meat or goblins or, well, you, then you'll eventually find yourself at the namesake of mr. Toothy Bottom.A large, mass of rock-hard skin, covered in spines and horns and other sharp shapes, it has been split open, and the dark flesh underneath is mined ceaselessly by a small army of Goblins. They aren't violent, in fact, they are quite cowardly, but they are as professional as any Goblin can be, and they are also fighting a continuous fight against the flesh with their pickaxes. For you see, the open wound is constantly trying to close itself, regenerating at a blinding speed that the Goblins have learned to keep up with after opening the wound large enough to allow for their massive excavation progress. This may be the toothy bottom of the pits and chasms. But it is also a small area of the sleeping Tarrasque, regenerating fast enough that it does not notice the harm being done to it, and with a large enough Goblin Workforce to drive the economy of what is, essentially, a small Goblin Kingdom in these tunnels, complete with blacksmiths making new Meat-axes and monster-hide-leathercrafters making workboots and pants for the Goblins working down in that caustic blood. And let's not forget, that the entire lower class of the city has eaten Tarrasque meat at least once, some of them for years. But it's only two silver pieces for as much pie as you want (or can carry), so who cares to ask where it's all coming from? u/Neknoh
Sarah’s sewing shop, “World class Seamstress.” - She means world class! She can repair even magical fabric to like new condition. Everything she makes alterations to gives them a +1 to charisma for 24hrs or until dirtied. Bonus returns after being thoroughly washed and dried (some items are dry clean only)She’s also a dry cleaners. u/rab-byte
The Philosopher’s Time Shop - Sundials, watches, windup clocks, candle clocks, hourglasses the size of mites up to the size of your average goliath, the Philosopher has a range to suit almost any buyer in need of a way to measure time. Be careful, the hours you spend there fly away like seconds! u/ElZoof
Oakshot Saddliery - Gwinnett Oakshot caters to a select clientele, those looking for clothes, armour, weapons and equipment specifically designed to suit those who spend at least part of their days in a different body shape. Minor magic at most, it’s mostly just very well designed to suit your Druid on the go or werebeing out for a night on the town. u/ElZoof
Jasper, Goldhand, Bloodstrangler and Smith - What does “‘til death us do part” mean if your wife is now a lich? Does a lifetime guarantee still stand if the object in question broke before the manufacturers were born? What exactly is an annuity? The firm of JGB&S is on hand to assist with non-devilish contracts of any kind. u/ElZoof
Morogh's "Pet's" - This pet shelter is run by an older halfling named Morogh. He's kindhearted and only wants the best for his little animal companions he sells. From apes over hawks to wolfs, he just has every animal companion you could think of, but his store also has a back area. Not everyone is welcomed there as he also sells abandoned monster hatchlings, like griffons, owlbears, pseudodragons and even a red dragon wyrmling. Those monsters are all tamed so no danger there, Morogh just wants to know his customers better before trying to sell one of his more 'exotic' assets. The adventurers maybe can persuade him or do a favor for him (possible quest), like acquiring some exotic food for the more demanding beasts and monsters he houses. After this Morogh decides to sell them one of his monsters as a companion. u/Th3Banzaii
Plane Ole' Butcher - A butcher shop that sells meat from an unknown plane of origin. One day a small portal opened up from the ground and strange-smelling exotic meats have been extruding from the portal. A shop was built around the portal which has been active and pumping for 50 years. People come to see the wonder firsthand but they stay for the dirt-cheap meats. The meats are char-grilled and heavily spiced to soften the meat's naturally pungent flavor. u/HeyShipmate
Looters Late Return (aka LooLaRe)- A seedy smelling store run by an androgynous goblin who wears overly fancy clothes. This goblin sells in bulk only, and at discounted prices. The catch is that if you make a purchase, you must sign a contract guaranteeing repeated weekly purchases. Your bulk discount increases the more product you are able to move, but if you are unable to maintain your weekly purchases, the goblin’s secret network of enforcers comes for it’s dues. Or your life. u/pikkl_rikk
Sandman Fisheries - This tightly packed stall smells or marine air and salty nets. It has all the sea can offer to the gourmet with a striking emphasis on huge fish: tuna, spadefish, and the occasional gargantuan squid. The product is impeccably fresh. Always. Sandman (a desert dweller and camel race aficionado) doesn't seem to understand what you're asking about the supply chain and how come his shop ever exists at hundred of miles from the nearest sea! u/Banuken
T'zargo's fine wares - This shop can be mysteriously seen in any plane, but always appears as an identical modern convenience store looking building. Inside is a tabaxi named T'zargo, always advertising his "fine wares at reasonable prices." He sells extremely rare and powerful items for millions of gold, along with random everyday items. Some of these rare items include an axe once wielded by Baphomet, and draws from a deck of many things. His mundane items he always pulls out of a box on his counter, and they include a full rowboat and 30 chairs. u/Kellen1013
The Magic Commoner - A basic magic item shop owned by a young elf wizard named Tavon Ilidan. He sells all sorts of magical things from armor to weapons and rings an such. The thing about his shop even though on the outside it looked like a regular building despite being one solid color; purple, orange, green ect. But when you walk inside it's much larger than its outward appearance. The shop also travels via a magical door. Tavon has a set of different keys he keeps with him representing the different cities of the land/world. He first closes the front door, locks it, then unlocks it with a new city key and when he opens it, it opens to the new city.Tavon's appearance reflects on which city he is in and what color his shop is. If is shop is blue his robes are blue as well. Tavon also has a secret. Even though he looks like a young elf he is actually an ancient gold dragon that simply likes to travel and meet new people without the stigma of being a dragon. He likes to play tricks on people and test them to see if they are worthy of specific items in his shop, (IE a wand of fireballs he made himself.) u/nota_person
Mallard Maladies - A veterinary clinic for ducks. The shop keeper is an old blind man who refuses to heal non duck creatures, but can be tricked into healing non ducks with a high enough deception ability. Despite the name, the clinic services male and female ducks. u/El_Jewbacabra
The Exploding Wand Shop- A shop that is characterized by an explosion that lifts the roof of the building off the walls and expelled black smoke every few hours - followed by the owner shouting from inside "I'M FINE, EVERYTHING'S OKAY!"The owner is a young Eladrin Artificer named Seyf Melorathian who experiments on new wands and other magical wonders. His face is a black charcoal from the soot of the explosions but otherwise would be a light brown. He has a pair of glasses that protects his eyes from being covered in soot. He has blond hair and wears a Smith's apron. He sells common rarity wands, up to rare rarity wonderous items, and has been working on an experimental wand of fireballs. You can only purchase an experimental wand if you do a material gathering quest for him.If you buy one of his wand of fireballs (2000gp and a waiver signed to not sue) there's a 10% chance that when used the wand will cast a second fireball centered on you during the spell. He also offers enchanting services at various speeds depending on the rarity of the requested enchantment. He will also willingly take on apprentices or teach enchantment to anyone. u/xBramStokerx
Fishman’s Man Fry – A Triton, named Vamras Vogalath, with broken Common serves delectable seafood dishes. If asked about the name, he explains that it is food FOR men, not for fishes.Side note- this is shop is not anywhere near any large body of water. Nobody in town is sure exactly where the fish come from. u/Unprincipled
Shwarma Tent - delicious herb infused fried flatbread with cured meats and shredded carrot and cucumber. The tent has small tripod tables and stools of worn wood. Patrons carve their names and other messages into the tabletops. Among the mundane names can be found the names of previous characters and NPCs that the party met, BBEGs they defeated, dated long ago, the current ruler of the land and the name of an old lover with a heart around it, Ash Ketchum, Drizzt, The Doctor, and the original Avengers. Searching carefully can also reveal a cryptic message to the party, seemingly carved years prior, but naming the PCs. u/bluecor
Threads of Fate - three old sisters weave spidersilk and mundane silk into beautiful garments with embroidery that sometimes changes its image. For instance, a nightrobe has the moon and a starry sky embroidered, and the moon changes its phase with the real moon. On another, a dragon slowly chases its own tail, with its wingtips pointing to the time, as a clock. Yet another displays an hourglass which constantly drains, and runs out when the wearer dies. Other images might show great moving battles, gently waving flags that slowly fade and dilapidate as the empire becomes more corrupt, or ruins that become progressively overgrown with vines. The theme of the garments deal with the passage of time and the inevitable end of life. u/bluecor
Salty's - the owner Saltamancia sells salt of differing coarseness and colors, and is an expert on which textures best compliment which purposes, from baking fine rolls to soaking one's feet after a days march. He has certain rare salts from distant lands with rare properties. For abjuring circles, he has a blessed salt that cannot be dispersed by gusts of wind. For healing, he has a fine blue salt that, when mixed with honey and packed into a wound, prevents infection and scarring. Another salt taken with hot peppermint tea can remove an additional level of exhaustion with a rest. True to his name, Saltamancia is old and curmudgeonly u/bluecor
Bestboots - Bestboots sells custom footwear of exceeding quality, made from rare materials. The footwear can be light for nimble moves or heavy for kicking doors. With the right materials (possibly a quest) minor advantages can be built into the footwear. For example, a sole of felted yeti hair can give normal traction on ice, and a sole of gummed soapwood sap can allow the wearer to ignore a casting of grease underfoot. u/bluecor
Hap's Microbrews - Hap claims to have perfected the means of beer portability, in that his brews are bottled and sealed under pressure in containers of lightweight spun cellulose which dont shatter when dropped. Opening his bottled beer releases a small localized burst of cold, chilling the beer just shy of freezing. The locals generally ignore his cart and "ice cold beer" sign, as ales are meant to be drunk at room temperature so that they don't unsettle the stomach. A discouraged Hap sits by his cart of beer bemoaning his own foolishness at sinking his fortune into such a folly. u/bluecor
Indelible - this quiet dusty alcove sells the magical inks, parchment, paper, vellum, papyrus, and delicate quills needed to prepare arcane and divine scrolls. Also sketch artistry, heraldry, and calligraphy supplies. Blank spellbooks, charcoal, pastels, and a few unique items are sold. Glowing chalk leaves marks that remain luminous for several hours. A special lightly waxed paper is waterproof and can be written on underwater with a special pencil. A waterproof scrollcase holds six tightly rolled papers in individual tubes, designed so you can immediately draw out the scroll you desire without searching through a sheaf of papers. The proprietor Abagnale is a gifted forger, and can make needed documents for the right fee, but only those skilled in thieve's cant would be able to recognize this based on a small glyph carved above the lintel. u/bluecor
The Magical Arts - this is a totally mundane shop which sells shaved and marked decks of cards, scarves for pulling from your sleeves, salted nuts cans that shoot a confetti burst when opened, squirting lapel flowers, palm buzzers, chewing gum that turns your teeth black, whoopie cushions, and stink spray. The guy working there isn't the owner, but is happy to teach you how to use his goods. While distracting you with a card trick, he will also attempt to shortchange you or pickpocket something (minus 4 to notice his ledgerdemain). If caught, he will only say "check your pocket" and there you will find the item you thought he pickpocketed. The Bee's Knees - honey from different types of flowers with exceptional flavors. Meads of each type are also sold, as well as bee pollen and honey candies. A honey from frostclover will quickly dispell a hangover. Phasebee royal jelly can allow an additional use of misty step for a character with that feature, but the cost is exorbitant. The affogatto with honeycomb, coffee, and ice cream is delicious, and gives the benefits of a short rest when consumed in the shop over the course of an hour. u/bluecor
Wacky Backy - Mr. C. Marin runs this fine tobacconist. House blends of pipe and cigarette tobacco can have classic Gandolf effects: controllable luminous smoke rings of various colors, and custom flavors and scents. The halfling weed is also sold. A self-lighting pipe is available, as well as a "peace pipe," which is a heavy iron pipe useable as a club (but you can also smoke out of it). Mr. Marin can craft custom peace pipes of nearly any light weapon. u/bluecor
Wild Bill's Skins - Bill buys and sells tanned and untanned hides of all types. All. Types. Bill can craft armor and other leather goods from nearly any type of hide. Custom saddles can be made for any beast. A saddle on display is embossed "ride me hard and put me away wet." It isn't for sale, and it looks like it would fit Bill. He can craft a skin-tight custom leather armor that is concealable under clothing, but the customer must go into the back of the shop for a very long and invasive fitting. Rumor has it that some customers never emerge. u/bluecor
Yellow Dancer - This is a musical instrument store run by a purple-haired elf named Lancer who was a freedom fighter in the past. His sister, Yellow Dancer herself, a famous concert performer who is a recognized star, is sometimes there in his place. Instruments of high quality and beginner pieces are sold. On commission, Lancer can craft an instrument which contains a secret sheath for a hidden weapon or wand. Also sold is "the Axe," a battleaxe/guitar combo, with a magical property of sound amplification that allows it to be heard in the largest venue, and allows for unique distortion effects. At DM Option, the Axe can also be used for ranged sonic attacks, mimicking the effects of Eldritch Blast. u/bluecor
The Titty Twister: an adult entertainment venue, mostly for merchants and caravan guards. A goblin barker in a tophat and coattails out front gives a spirited pitch about the feminine wonders to be found within. Inside is a seedy establishment styled to look like an ancient temple. Billiards and darts games line the walls, and a poker game is playing out at a table near the center. Its a rough crowd, and fights that break out are settled with the loser being dragged away by the bouncers and the winner buying a round for the house. Beautiful dancers take turns on stage and mingle with clients between songs. Private shows are available. During the day the massive door is barred and the place is eerily silent, but from dusk til dawn raucous action is there for the taking. Locals stay well clear and pray for protection if they must pass near this den of sin. u/bluecor
The Campus Martius: This strange storefront is a place for games of strategy, including draughts and card games, as well as sandtable war strategy matches involving miniature army figurines, played out with dice and measuring sticks. Arguments over rules are common, and are arbitrated by a robed and wigged judge on a low dias at one end, who often consults an enormous tome of rules which only he is allowed to read from. 1sp per game, per player, but by convention, the loser pays the fees of his opponents. A sweet green drink called mountain brew is popular here. It enhances focus, adding +1 to concentration saves for an hour, but leaves one tired, -1 to all saves for an hour thereafter. u/bluecor
Millenium Sustainable Armory: run by an elvish druid, Millenium sells "murder free" armor made from silk, giant leaves, sustainably harvested ironwood and similar materials. The armor otherwise has the properties of normal light and medium armors, but contains no leather, bone, or metal. Cost is about double. Heavy armor is not available. The leaves making up the armor do not wilt or turn brown. u/bluecor
The Meat Market: run by a shadowy figure in torn robes, this odd shop gives permanent magical effects in exchange for body parts. The more important the organ or body part, the better the effect. The effect goes to whoever the part comes from, so don’t get greedy! Wonder where the parts are going... u/CephaloPawd
Fernado's Fish Frenzy - in a village where magic and fishing collide, you might run into a man who can be at multiple places at a time, Fernado. He is a mystical fisherman who sets up booths in town squares, where the fish fight to the death in gladiator-style combat. The loser, is placed on his selling slab and the victor becomes larger in size. He has a 'leaderboard' that updates magically after every battle, accounting for all of the places Fernado is at in your world. u/BEZERK0xD

1968: Once Upon a Time in the West (Leone) The king of the spaghetti western may be best known for the Man with No Name trilogy, but his best film isn't it. While the trilogy was more in the good fun spirit of classic westerns, Once Upon a Time is a slower and more artistic film. The pace doesn't drag it down in the slightest, as every frame is absolutely beautiful, and more impact is given to the big moments. Morricone's score for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly may be more iconic, but his best work by a long shot is here. The main theme may even be the best piece of music ever composed for a movie. The three protagonists are all equally great characters and are all rootable in spite of their flaws. Henry Fonda uncharacteristically plays a villain here, and he knocks it out of the park. Simultaneously as badass and beautiful as a movie can be. 1969: Satyricon (Fellini) To me, Satyricon is like The Holy Mountain if The Holy Mountain was actually good. An incredibly fun ride from one place to another throughout ancient Rome, stuffed with beautiful cinematography, amazing art direction, hilarious jokes, and affecting moments-- not even the occasional toilet humor can bring this down all that much. 1970: The Conformist (Bertolucci) Some of the most stunning lighting and cinematography ever put to film, as well as an admirable message about being yourself and confronting your past rather than ignoring it. If it has a problem, it's the final minute. While it is very symbolic of the film's themes, it's also pretty sudden and contrived. 1971: The French Connection (Friedkin) Still one of the best action movies ever made and likely the most well shot one (though that could also be King of New York). Epitomizes the moist and grimy atmosphere of '70s New York movies and provides an obsessed protagonist to make this far more interesting than just an amazing action movie. 1972: The Godfather (Coppola) It's alright. 1973: Badlands (Malick) The spirituality Malick is so iconic for isn't really present in this spree killer tale, but his penchant for beautiful cinematography certainly is. Martin Sheen also gives his best performance aside from Apocalypse Now. 1974: Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (Scorsese) You wouldn't expect it from Scorsese considering the female characters in many of his films, but Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore is a surprisingly forward thinking movie about a woman. You also probably wouldn't expect there to be a famous sitcom based on a Scorsese movie, but funny things do happen (in this movie). 1975: The Passenger (Antonioni) 1976: Taxi Driver (Scorsese) 1979: Stalker (Tarkovsky) There's not a lot that can be said about Stalker that hasn't already been said. I will say that despite it being the most iconic piece of slow cinema, it still never felt remotely slow. When I turned this on, it was at A.M. and I was just checking if I'd like it; but my sleepy, ADHD plagued brain was immediately entranced by the gorgeous cinematography, and then the characters. If there's a flaw in the movie, it's that some conversations in it can occasionally verge on pretension, but for the most part it was a very affecting movie. I thought Godard did low budget sci-fi amazingly with Alphaville, but this is even better. 1980: Raging Bull (Scorsese) Raging Bull formed the template that Scorsese would use for the rest of his biopics, and despite its depressive qualities, I find it's the one I return to most. Not sure why. Maybe it's the beautiful cinematography. There's something oddly moving about watching an unsympathetic man being brought to his lowest and allowing you to sympathize with him. It's just a powerful experience. 1990: Dances with Wolves (Costner) Throughout my years on Reddit, I've surprisingly seen much vitriol directed towards Dances with Wolves, seemingly simply because Costner beat Scorsese for the Oscar. To me, Goodfellas has always been mid tier Scorsese. Entertaining no doubt, but it never grabbed my soul the way Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Last Temptation, Age of Innocence, Silence, or even The King of Comedy did. And even when it comes to entertaining crime flicks, I feel Casino and Wolf of Wall Street are better. Dances with Wolves may have been a tiny bit corny at times, but it did grab my soul. John Barry is always fantastic, but his score here is often goosebump inducing. The cinematography is so fucking beautiful that it makes all four hours fly by, even in spite of the movie's very slow pace. Costner is wooden as usual, but here it works as he plays an understated character that communicates with people who don't speak his language. The film's first hour is also some of the comfiest cinema you're ever gonna get; just Costner maintaining the fort, interacting with wildlife, going for swims, doing some stunning sightseeing, and writing in his journal. The movie manages its sentimentality tastefully; it manages to be openly emotional in a way that moves rather than makes you roll your eyes. It also handles its politics with respect and subtlety, as all sides are shown to rather brutal in it. 1992: Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (Lynch) It's a huge shame that Fire Walk with Me was so derided upon release, as Twin Peaks was initially going to be a film franchise. In many ways, ABC's interference with the series was a good thing and a bad thing. Lynch had many ill advised relationship ideas, and he also never intended to reveal Laura Palmer's killer. If Laura's killer had never been revealed, Fire Walk with Me never would've came to be-- and that'd've been a shame, as it stands as the series' best episode. Lynch never excelled at his fractured narratives and entrancing atmospheres more than he did here. Badalamenti's score is among the very best of all time. No matter what its critical reception was though, it is truly absurd that Lee and Badalamenti didn't receive Oscar nominations. 1996: The Funeral (Ferrara) 2011: The Hangover Part II (Phillips) Easily the most disliked film I've chosen as a favorite, but it's an opinion that's unlikely to change. Often strongly criticized for being a carbon copy of its predecessor, I actually think that's where much of what makes it great comes from. The original Hangover wasn't exactly high art, but it was insanely entertaining and rewatchable. If there's any movie that could get by as a carbon copy, it's The Hangover Part II. The character interactions are still very funny, and a higher percentage of the jokes land here. In fact, this may be the only movie that continues to make me laugh out loud no matter how many times I've seen it. But what I like most is that it's a black comedy version of the original (spoilers ahead). In the first one, when the trio visits the hospital, after realizing they'd been given roofies they ask if they'd been raped. It's played as a joke, because of course that wouldn't happen, right? In Part II, one of them does indeed get raped. In the original, the worst their lost friend receives is some sunburns. In Part II, he loses a finger. You get the idea. Something that also stands about this movie compared to literally every other mainstream comedy of the 21st century is how well it's shot.
Delta Green AAR: State of Jefferson #0 Preparation
TL:DR: PTBP inspired me to run a Delta Green game and put together a campaign setting. To help with note taking and motivation, I decided to put together some After-Action reports and post them here. -=-=-=-
I run a weekly 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons game. Every Tuesday night for two years at this point for 6 PCs. Level 14, going on 15 in an adapted version of Paizo Publishing's Ironfang Invasion adventure path. We’ve probably got another six months of solid play, aiming for a finish at around level 18. Running this game for this long taught me a lot, even though it wasn’t my first long runner. But one thing it taught me above all else is: I don’t want to run Dungeons and Dragons or anything like it anytime soon. There's a whole tirade about why that is, but suffice to say a few months ago I started looking for a new system to replace 5e once my Tuesday night group was done with it. Plenty of good games stuck their heads up (Band of Blades/Blades in the Dark being my favourite) but none seemed to be a good fit for six people. Then I stumbled across PTBP and Delta Green. I had played some CoC years ago and Sci-Fi Horror has to be my favourite genre of all time, tack on the modern setting and I was hooked. I had spent many hours reading SCPs and even a few writing some, plus running a Hunter:The Vigil game years back and even playing a Hunter LARP in the same time period. Plus the PTBP boys have such an infectious enthusiasm. And then I actually ran a short 2-session story and realised that 6 PC Delta Green would be a nightmare. With the modern setting and the investigative style, players are constantly going off on tangents or separating the party. With 4 people and a tense feel, people stay interested, but with six (and more importantly, MY SIX), there is no way that it would be a cohesive session. So I said what every ForeverDM says; “This can become my campaign setting that I always say I’m working on!” So I started writing a campaign setting for a Delta Green game that may never come. Enabling me to fully flesh out an entire region complete with NPCs, plots, eldritch horrors and the works! I’d slowly find players, run each of them through individual ‘Spookening’ sessions to show their origins into the Opera. It’d be dope! Having just finished my Honours Thesis, I wanted to establish writing as something I liked, not something I did for the expensive paper. My Girlfriend was interested from the start and wanted desperately to play the game when it ran. I was talking about it a bit to different folks and when they asked ‘When is it running?’ or ‘Can I play?’ I would always say it wasn’t near ready, I mean, I hadn’t even mapped out all the airports in the region, how could I run a game there without knowing where the airports are? Eventually, I got cornered by four players (including my girlfriend) who wanted to be in the game, had a time, place and wanted to know if I would do it. This was the first lesson Delta Green taught me. “Your campaign setting is never finished and nothing will make you write your important stuff like a game in three hours.” So, I ran session 1 on a Sunday evening and haven’t looked back. This AAR will be an account of the setting, the story, and our agents as they travel a hopefully extreme and entertaining story. Hopefully, none of them end up on here since I’ll also try to include my Keeper perspective and process of putting together this setting. Finally, a massive thank you to the PTBP boys, I’m not entirely up to date as of writing this (EP58) but I’m stoked to be an Honorary Police Officer and owe a lot of these ideas and growth to Zach’s style and the boy's hijinks. -=-=-=-
As a preface, I’m not an American. I’m an Australian who’s never been to the Western Hemisphere. So my apologies for butchering your country, your towns, and your overall culture. I've moved some history around and changed some events to make my timeline work. Hopefully it's not offensive. The basis and name of the setting is something I learned about from another podcast (shout out the BehindTheBastards and ItCouldHappenHere). The State of Jefferson is a secessionist movement in rural Northern California and Southern Oregon. Essentially a right-wing/rural response to the liberal cities of LA and Portland, these regions want to secede from California and Oregon, becoming the 51st American state. A Pacific NorthWest setting gives tonnes of great locales, from Redwood forests, mountain peaks, wild rivers and even some desert thrown in there. Couple this with problems with limited law enforcement, a multicultural history, and the stories write themselves. I started by putting a map together since that always helps me visualise what I’m working with, plus at this point, this was just a campaign setting, not an active game. I made this map by taking one of the proposed State of Jefferson maps that I liked, editing out the state names, then searching for the incorporated cities of each county, along with their county seats. I didn’t use many scales, as you can see, and it makes Weaverville look really important even though it has a population of around 3,600. I also placed the state capital in Redding, after looking at the discourse around SOJ, turns out some want it to be Yreka, CA, since that was first suggested back in the sixties. But I couldn’t see that happening now. So I ended up with this map: https://imgur.com/a/Bx5Mnv6 So now I needed to make the State of Jefferson a thing, how would that happen in 2020? I could see Trump doing it, in a crazy situation. Jefferson counties are pretty solidly Republican, for the same reasons they want to be their own state to begin with. So I imagined a 2020 electoral race where Trump engaged with these far-right groups like the militias and such, promising a look into a 51st state. But saying it and doing it are two separate things. So let's ratchet up the tension some more. Trump wins 2020, promising to look into the State of Jefferson. 2021 Trump has a massive stroke. Initially, it looks like he’s not going to pull through, the GOP starts planning for his replacement to step up. Current VP is an old-school Neocon named Andrew Cohen. But Trump does pull through and despite some major health concerns, seems convinced to stay in the White House. The old-school Neocons behind Andrew Cohen that used to be the soul of the GOP smelled power again and don’t want to give in, meanwhile the New-Right cultural conservatives backing Trump smell a coup. The GOP starts to implode. Trump, desperate to solidify his base, is firing out executive orders left, right and center. One of them is the creation of the State of Jefferson. A year later, it's 2022, Andrew Cohen is acting President and national politics is a shitshow. So many executive orders went out that it's impossible to pull them all back and it looks like Jefferson is going to stick. But our players are going to be Federal agents, what are they doing in this backwoods state? Well, I imagine a new state appearing largely out of nowhere would throw all the federal departments a curveball. Suddenly they need to work out if the FBI needs a headquarters in Redding, what about DoD? DoJ? So they send a big audit team to work out what federal government efforts would be needed in the new state. This would be called ‘The Office of Temporary Handover’ and would be the taskforce my players would be assigned to. What I wrote up is as follows:
Office of Temporary Handover
A fifty person strong taskforce, the OTH is made of representatives of a large variety of shifting government departments. Their job was originally twofold: -Maintain the essential functions of their organisations during the handover and establishment of the state. -Assess the State of Jefferson for their various organisations, in regards to offices, resources, and personnel. Officially the Federal Office of Temporary Handover was established on the 1st of April, 2022 at 2042 South Market St in Redding, which was to be the state capitol (not without a considerable fight from Chico, Eureka, and Yreka). Originally the OTH was headed up by Brennan Bartlet from the Department of Labour. Originally the DOL had intended the main aspects of the OTH to be assessing manpower requirements to then be passed onto the government departments to fulfill. However, quickly after arriving on the ground in Redding, OTH leaders found that the twin regions of Southern Oregon and Northern California were a mess. Thirty years of, in some cases, criminal negligence from state governments had resulted in thousands of missed assessments, unsolved cases, and questionable decisions. The first big scoop was found by an analyst for the Treasury Department (Kyle Chapman) who found that all judicial efforts undertaken in the town of Paisley in Lake County had been taken over by the Millennium Forestry Company. Pulling on this string revealed the start of the problems for the OTH. Quickly, Bartlet was replaced by Agent Luciano Pareja from the Department of Homeland security. The call went wide to nearly every single federal department to get their asses to Jefferson and work out what was going wrong in their respective fields. 2042 South Market street became a circus with the Department of Agriculture surveyors sharing offices with Aviation officials while the Department of Defence investigators camp out in the staircase. It was during these initial investigations that things got interesting for those who were paying attention. The initial deluge of cases caught up all the obvious things, there had been no services conducted on the East Coast Cable Terminus in Point Arena was overdue for servicing by fifteen years, there were exactly fifteen missing persons reported in Modoc county national parks four years in a row and Douglas County sheriff Lyle Parsins has held the position for ten years despite the county records holding death certificates Parsins from 2007,2017 and 2019. These odd reports languished in the stacks upon stacks of issues reported and aside from being mildly interesting when they were discovered, there were bigger fish to fry. Kyle Chapman later revealed a conspiracy of kickbacks and corruption between the Millennium Forestry and the Lake County supervisory council worth more than 13 million dollars, earning himself a tasty promotion. At the same time, the DA of Siskyou county was gunned down by a motorcyclist in Dorris. Two things became clear to everyone working in the OTH;
There is so much to uncover in Jefferson that the real task is finding the biggest malfeasance you can and riding that investigation all the way to the top.
The bigger the malfeasance, the bigger the risk that someone might try to take it from you or that it might blow up in your face.
This allowed those strange cases that were more interesting than juicy to slip through the cracks but also caused the OTH offices to become a den of paranoia staffed by some of the most ambitious young workers for these federal departments. Its been two months since Kyle Chapman’s case hit the state court in Redding and 2042 South Market has spilled out into the parking lot with a massive gazebo. It's a hot summer and there is the promise of promotion around every corner as our PC’s arrive. The right and wrong kind of people have started to see the dots that need connecting, here's hoping someone stops finding dots. -=-=-=-=-=- Note: Sam, Bree, James, and Roni, if you have somehow ended up here, turn back now. Finally, we needed a bad guy. This was the thing I had been avoiding, in favor of working out how many and where all the military bases are in Northern Cali and Southern Oregon (creating a real suspicious google history along the way). Being an investigative and paranoia based game about cults and conspiracy, I didn’t want to just to a ‘Monster of the Week’ style game. Plus one of my players is pretty well versed in his Cthulhu mythos, so I didn’t want to do something standard. Which made me want to stay away from Deep ones and fishbits (although maybe I can work the absence of Deep ones a plot point later on?) So what do I have? I’ve got a need for a massive conspiracy, lots of pristine wilderness, a history of big American Indian tribes, Spanish Colonisation and American power. Plus a new state. I know, let’s make the new state the conspiracy. For some reason making this new state is part of some eldritch ritual about power and such. Sounds dope. Which Old God cares about human power structures and the corruption of man? Old buddy Nylarthotep. Bam, we’ve got a non-standard bad guy and a huge conspiracy that can be staring them in the face the whole time. It turns the passive hints about the chaos of creating a new state into subtle easter eggs dotting the campaign. But I also don’t want the eldritch ritual to be already done. Gotta give the players a chance to die trying to save the world. So perhaps it's just a step in the overall ritual. How many steps are there in the ritual? Well, a d20 roll tells me that there’s 16. It sounds like a good number to me. A story was coming together: It was thousands of years past the original humans encountered the being known as Emperor of Sky and Earth, Ne-ab Gendumahaah, or simply the Spirit of Man, an implicit force in the Northern United States that influenced the minds of the powerful through dreams and visions. It would be the dreams of Ne-Ab Gendumahaah that would lead Rabbit Foot to solidify the Shasta people into a great confederacy. Where his favour goes, great power forms and those powerful will become great. In reality, The Spirit of Man is an aspect of Nylarthotep, the chaos messenger of the Sultan, Azzathoth. What is happening in the North West is one spark of weakness that plays out as a flame of weakness against Azzathoth by his agent. A fleck of paint and pain on a tapestry millions of years and miles old. The original intention of the Spirit of Man was the completion of sixteen rituals across the region. As more and more of these rituals would be completed they would weaken the differences between realities, these would corrupt the minds and world to the whims of those who would be powerful, granting them longevity and even passively twisting the world to support them. But it would weaken the nature of reality for all others, bringing in great monsters and factors. If all sixteen rituals were completed the Spirit of Man would be brought forward to bequeath true power onto the successful, in reality, the knowledge of Nylarthotep would be its own downfall as the invoker would be rent asunder and the damage wrought by the pursuit would wink throughout the cosmos. The first ritual would be completed by a shaman of the Goshute People 30,000 Years ago. By the year 1700, the Shasta people had completed four rituals in total, this created the most powerful tribal confederacy of the West Coast. But the native Americans feared Ne-Ab Gendumahaah, intensely fearful of the give and take of existence, were difficult to enrapture to the power of the Spirit, but the White man was not. The Spanish would complete six rituals in the period between 1660 and 1840. The American people have completed five since the Union arrived, the last being the consecration of the Redding State Legislature. Now forces move to complete the final ritual as the Office of Temporary Handover comes into the picture. The players have to discover the connections between the rituals and attempt to stop the cabal of the rich and powerful before millions of people are killed. -=-=- This will leave the players investigating the fallout of rituals conducted long in the past, trying to put the dots together in time to stop the last few being completed. This was about all I had going into session one. Since then we’ve had four total sessions and it's been a ride. Next time I’ll talk about session one and individual session planning/running. Thankyou for reading this and thank you again to the PTBP boys and community for being so amazing. P.S - I tried to settle on a campaign theme like PTBP's No Backbone, at this point I'm split between Two Gallants - Fly Low Carrion Crow and Boogeyman - Black Casino and the Ghost. -PresidentRhino (Hyenidae on the Discord/Twitch)
